Metal Expansion Joint

Metallic Expansion Joints are installed in pipe work and duct systems to prevent damage caused by thermal growth, vibration, pressure thrust and other mechanical forces.

There is a wide range of metallic bellows designs in a variety of materials. Options range from the simplest convoluted bellows used in petroleum refineries. Materials include all types of stainless steels and high grade nickel alloy steels.

Expansion joints are used in piping systems to absorb thermal expansion or terminal movement where the use of expansion loops is undesirable or impractical. SPD Bellows Provides Expansion joints in various shapes and materials.

Angular Rotation

We designed and manufactured expansion joints to provide highly flexible absorption of movement in different piping segments, machine or devices in general.

Movement requiring compensation can be caused by numerous factors including temperature, inertia, caving floors, misalignment. The potential fields of application are vast and cover the entire industrial spectrum.

The type of movement required, its magnitude and frequency, along with the characteristics of the carrier fluid (especially if corrosive) and operating conditions (pressure and temperature) are essential information in selecting the correct expansion joints to install.

The Inner sleeve

Inner sleeves are used whenever expansion joints must be protected from:

  • Abrasion caused by solid particles in the flowing medium
  • Deposits of solid components in the corrugations
  • Vibrations generated by high velocities

Materials choice

The wide variety of applications for which our bellows are used necessitates an appropriate choice of materials. The most important requirements on the material are in general:

  • Corrosion resistance
  • Temperature resistance
  • Strength
  • Welding properties
  • Forming properties

Rectangular expansion joints absorb all of the movements in any one length of piping, but they are mainly used to absorb axial movements. Rectangular expansion joints do not restrain pressure thrust so adequate anchors and guides must be provided.

Rectangular expansion joints are with U& V shaped convolutions and available with different corner configuration i.e., rounded, double miter and miter. The “V” convolution profile will be supplied with single miter corners, unless otherwise specified. Round corner bellows will always be constructed using the “U” convolution profile. These expansion joints can be manufactured with one or more convolutions and with limitless dimensions.

SPD Bellows can supply rectangular expansion joints based on specific or customer requirements.
